From Gavaskar to Tendulkar, take a look at the greatest sportspersons
New Delhi: World’s largest and most vibrant democracy is celebrating its 67th Independence Day on Thursday. The occasion, pregnant with poignancy and rich in heritage, marks a nation’s freedom from years of colonial yoke and repression.
As far as nation’s sporting history is concerned, it has very little to cheer about, especially when compared to other democracies. India is yet to wake up to a sporting culture, yet to free its sports from politics and yet to inject some sport in politics. With no sporting culture, dismal facilities and inadequate coaching, its little surprise that the 1.2 billion plus population has produced only a handful of medal winners at Olympics and other sporting events of significant repute.
However, hope floats in the face of severest of adversities. Handful alright, but India has, to its credit, produced some of the finest sportspersons in various disciplines. Here’s a look at some of the post-Independence sporting heroes. Get ready to be overawed.
