Namma Metro tunnelling may get delayed further
Bangalore: Division railway manager of South Western Railways (SWR) S Mani indicated on Thursday that metro's tunnelling work beneath the Supervisors' Training Centre near City Railway station would be delayed until railway board showed them the way.
"The matter has gone to the railway board and we are waiting for their direction. BMRCL will have to pay a licence fee after which only the land asked for can be acquired," Mani said.
There are three places near Majestic where the metro will bore tunnel through the underbelly — at Supervisors' Training Centre, Mahatma Gandhi railway quarters and Platform Road.
The complaint arose when the railways realised that the licence fee had not been paid by metro. But metro denied the charge saying that Rs 98 crore for acquiring the land and beginning the work had been paid to SWR.
BMRCL spokesman could not be contacted for comments.
Meanwhile, tunnelling work from Majestic near Kempegowda bus station towards the east corridor has begun. Tunnel boring machines Helen and Margarita have bored 75m and 9m, respectively, till date.
SWR has proposed to the railway board to make three or four express trains halt at Byappanahalli railway station.
"When the metro becomes functional, it will be helpful for railway passengers to board it from Byappanahalli. So we will try to give stoppage until the renovation project of the Byappanahalli third coaching terminal is sanctioned," said Mani.
He said that the latest proposal for renovation was pitched at Rs 15 crore - Rs 20 crore and it would be sanctioned by April 2012. BMRCL also proposed to SWR to build a foot overbridge from the main station to the metro station. SWR wanted a connection of the bridge to the intermediate platforms of the railway station.
Yeshwantpur will see a wider foot overbridge connecting the platforms of the railway station to the metro station on Tumkur Road across the railway land given for metro construction.
