New Delhi/Patna: Congress President Sonia Gandhi expressed grief and sorrow over the tragedy during the Chhat Puja celebrations in Patna on Monday.

At least 18 persons, most of them women and children, were killed and scores of others injured as a makeshift bridge caved in triggering a stampede during Chhat Puja at Adalatganj ghat on the bank of river Ganges.

All the devotees injured in the stampede were rushed to Patna Medical College Hospital. Bodies of the dead have also been brought to the PMCH, say reports.

Media reports quoted police officials as saying "The shocking incident took place after a temporary bridge made of bamboo collapsed due to heavy rush of people, mainly devotees and their family members. The incident took place when people were returning after offering prayers at sunset at Adalatganj ghat." (with PTI inputs)
