Deceased liquor baron, Ponty Chadha had a strong Punjab connection. If rumors are to be believed, Chadha was brought to Punjab by a ruling party minister in 1997. At that time, Prakash Singh Badal had just come to power.
After coming to Punjab, Chaddha concentrated on manufacturing liquor rather than just selling it. He began to buy suger mills basically for producing alcohal.
Chaddha bought a mill in Hoshiarpur and soon launched Chaddha sugar industry in the state.
In 2002, Captain Amrinder Singh came to power and Chaddha developed cordial relations with him as well.
On 8 March 2004, Sukhbir Singh Bdal demanded a CBI probe of the liquor auctions at Ludhiyana. He accused that the government has benifitted Chaddha by a staggering 400 crore rupees.
After Kulwant Singh Chaddha, father of Ponty Chaddha passed away, there were visible cracks in the family over the property.
