Race to Raisina Hill: Presidential polls on July 19, counting on July 22
New Delhi: The Presidential election schedule has been announced here on Tuesday by Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath.
Addressing a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath kick started the presidential polls as the term of office of President Pratibha Patil expires on July 24.
30th June 2012: Last date for filing nominations for Presidential polls
2nd July 2012: Scrutiny of nominations filed for Presidential polls
4th July 2012: Last date to withdraw nominations
19th July: Voting on Presidential polls
22nd July: Counting of votes on the Presidential polls
The Election Commission (EC) is also engaged in preparation for the forthcoming elections in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura and Meghalaya, and systemic training of personnel to be engaged in these assembly polls has already commenced.
The EC has already started work on the checklist of 41 tasks for the Presidential election, officials said.
The ruling Congress and the opposition BJP have so far remained silent on the candidature issue, while NCP leader and former Speaker P A Sangma has already jumped into the race. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is considered as being among the frontrunners for the post.
