Bollywood titles might have a copyright attached to it, but a song has no strings attached to it. Maybe that’s the reason why our Bollywood filmmakers have started the trend of referring to famous Bollywood numbers when it comes to giving a title to their film. Call it lack of creativity or lack of inspiration, Bollywood filmmakers have stopped giving titles a good thought. A string of films have been named after contemporary songs. Here we take a look at some of the movies that have been inspired from contemporary songs.
The latest upcoming movie to be named after a famous Bollywood song is, ‘Dum Maaro Dum’. The film which has been directed by Rohan Sippy has Abhishek Bachchan, Rana Daggubati, Bipasha Basu and Prateik Babbar in the lead roles of the film. The title of the movie has been inspired from a famous song from an old Bollywood movie, ‘Hare Krishna Hare Ram’ which released in 1971 starring Dev Anand and Zeenat Aman.
The Hrithik Roshan starrer ‘Guzaarish’ which released in 2010 was inspired a famous Bollywood song from the movie, ‘Ghajini’. ‘Guzaarish’ has been directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and it’s a movie based on euthanasia (mercy killing) whereas ‘Ghajini’ is a movie directed by A.R. Murugadoss and is based on another disease called anterograde amnesia. The movie was released in 2008.
‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ which released this year has also been named after a famous Bollywood song. The title of the movie has been inspired from the song in ‘Pratigya’ which released in 1975. The movie, ‘Pratigya starred veteran actors Dharmendra and Hema Malini. Even the movie, ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ starred Dharmendra in it along with his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol.
Madhur Bhandarkar’s first romantic venture, ‘Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji’, was inspired from a touching song in ‘Ishqiya’. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, ‘Ishqiya’ was a romantic drama which starred Arshad Warsi, Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah in the lead roles. ‘Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji’ was a romantic comedy which starred Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Omi Vaidya, etc.
Farouque Kabir’s film ‘Allah Ke Banday’ was inspired from the song in ‘Waisa Bhi Hota Hai – Part II’. The evergreen number was sung by Kailash Kher. ‘Allah Ke Banday’ starred actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Atul Kulkarni and Sharman Joshi whereas ‘Waisa Bhi Hota Hai – Part II’ starred Arshad Warsi and Sandhya Mridul in the lead roles.
‘Chance Pe Dance’ has been named after a widely known song, ‘Chance Pe Dance’ from Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. A Bollywood romantic comedy, ‘Rab NeBana Di Jodi’ was a movie about a simple young man who transforms himself completely into a loud, stylish dude so that his wife can fall in love with him. ‘Chance Pe Dance’ was a movie about the journey of a young guy, who has dreams to make it big in Bollywood.
With Bollywood songs being transformed into titles of new films, it confirms our Bollywood filmmakers’ fascination for old songs. If this is the way Bollywood is going to work, guess what will happen if the story of the film also stop getting copyrighted.
