Samsung Galaxy S4 and Google Nexus 4 use same technology

This sounds a great news that the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S4 will not support TecTiles. Because is the reason than the next version of the app- the TecTile 2 with improved features will come for the new Galaxy phone.

The Galaxy S4 uses the NFC controller BCM2079x which is not compatible with the earlier Samsung TecTiles that use MiFare Tag. This new controller which is also there in the Google Nexus 4 uses a new set of standards, and hence will not read the earlier TecTiles.

TecTiles were introduced last year when Samsung launched the Galaxy S4 predecessor- the Galaxy S3. It showed the Near Field Communication capabilities of the phone through the TecTile app. Though not very popular, these NFC-enabled stickers offered a new dimension to how to switch on and off Wi-Fi on your phone in a location without pressing any key.

When AnandTech asked about this to Samsung, the company informed, that it will be “introducing TecTile 2, an update to the original TecTile NFC programmable tags, which will be available in the coming weeks”.

“TecTile 2 will use the current NFC technology on the market, allowing Samsung customers to further incorporate NFC into their daily lives and to use with the latest Samsung Mobile products and services, including the Galaxy S 4. Samsung customers can also fully utilize TecTiles 2 with existing Samsung Mobile NFC-enabled Android smartphones currently in market” Samsung said in a statement.
