Specs comparison: Google Nexus 7 2 (2013) and Google Nexus 7 (2012)

Dailybhaskar.com

Google has just launched its next version of its 7-inch tablet Google Nexus 7. The latest version Nexus 7 2 (2013) has a lot of addition with a better screen, faster processor, wireless charging, and two cameras. And yes, of course the latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, ‘even sweeter Jelly Bean’ as Google says.

It is a major improvement over the last years’s Sandy survivor, no doubt. Let us see what all improvements are there in the latest Nexus 7.

Is it thin and light?

The latest Nexus 7 2 is just 290 grams, that is about 50 grams less than the Nexus 7. It is just 8.65 mm in thickness, when compared to the 10.45mm Nexus 7, that is thinner in spite of housing a camera and stereo speakers.

Compare it to iPad Mini and you will find the Apple product is thinner at just 7.2 mm but a little heavier with a 308 grams of weight. The extra width of the screen can justify for the extra weight, but Apple definitely know how to pack power into a tablet and making it bulkier.

Is the display better?

You don’t need to ask this question, the Nexus 7 2 definitely wins. On a 7.02 inch display screen protected by scratch resistant corning glass the tablet offers 1920 x 1200 pixels display. That comes to 323 ppi display resolution.

This is better than the 7-inch 2012 model that sported 1280 x 800 pixels display with 216 ppi display resolution. If you want a comparison with the iPad Mini, you will find the display resolution falls behind both these two Nexus devices. iPad Mini is a 7.9 inch IPS display panel with 1024 x 768 pixels resolution at 163 ppi.

What about the performance?

Last year’s Nexus 7 had an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor under its hood which was better performer than the dual-core A5 processor of the iPad Mini. This year Google decided to opt for the popular Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core, the processor than powered leading performers in 2012. Nexus 4, Asus PadFone 2, HTC J Butterfly, LG Optimus G,  Oppo Find 5, Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia ZR are powered by this processor.

It is faster than the previous version as it is supported by 2 GB of RAM, which is two times the Nexus 7 (2012) sported.

Camera

There is a primary camera of 5 megapixel which was not there in the last year’s version. The 2012 tablet had just one 1.2 megapixel camera. This year Google opted for 5 megapixel primary and 1.2 megapixel secondary camera. The 5 megapixel camera comes with Android 4.3 features. It “provides a wider view through the lens and the ability to quickly and easily pan around and snap photos. Overall, the feature appears to be far more user-friendly”, says eweek.

The iPad Mini has a similar 5 megapixel and 1.2 megapixel cameras on board. The primary camera is great with a list of added features minus a 360 degree panorama/photosphere shot.

Battery

The Nexus 7 2 has got a 3950 mAh battery which is appears small in front of the 4325 mAh battery of the Nexus 7. But, the Android 4.3 which runs on the latest tablet optimizes battery for efficient use to offer use up to 9 hours active use, which is one hour more than what Nexus 7 battery offered.
