Ahmedabad: Spiritual guru Asaram bapu, formerly, Asaram Harpalani used to sell coal before he turned to spirituality. Since then, Asaram bapu’s public life has been full of controversies. This time it is the charge of sexual assault of a minor girl at his Jodhpur ashram.

The police has begun the investigation has taken the victim to the crime scene.

Sant Asaram bapu was born in the Sindh province on 17th April, 1941. He is married to Lakshmi Devi and has a son and a daughter. At the time of partition, the Harpalani family had come to Gujarat. Like his father, he too was a wood and coal seller for a short period. But after he chose spirituality as a way of  life, he became a sacred saint among his followers and disciples.

42 years back, Asaram built his first ashram on 10 acres of land in Gujarat. He adopted ‘bapu’ as his surname. Presently, there are over 400 major and minor ashrams in India and abroad and lakhs of followers.

But the present controversy has put him on a stranglehold. The minor girl’s complaint of alleged sexual assault has been registered under Section 376(rape), 354 (assault), and 509 (insult) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Sant Shri Asharamji Ashram’s media in-charge, Dr. Sunil Wankhede has refuted all such charges and called them false and baseless.
