Ahmedabad: Prisoners in city jail will have to wait till December 21 to be produced in court. In a letter written to concerned authorities, JM Rana, ACP, police headquarters, Shahibaug, has said that officials at the headquarters, who are responsible for taking the prisoners to and from court will be busy in poll bandobast during this period. Hence, they will not be able to accompany prisoners to the court.
Nearly 70 percent of city police, para-military forces and police teams from other states are busy with election-related security matters.
Rana has informed jail authorities, registrars of sessions court, metropolitan court, rural court and family court that the police officials will not be able to carry out their duties for the jail between December 9 and 21.
In view of this development, the prisoners will not be taken to the court keeping security issues in mind. Jail authorities said that although this may cause inconvenience, it is in the best interest of all. Besides, the concerned authorities have been informed beforehand so that they can plan accordingly.
As part of election duty, police officials are involved in security of political leaders visiting the state as well as security at EVM centres. They are also in charge of maintaining overall law and order before and after elections.
