Gandhinagar: The international kite festival, which has become one of the most popular events in the city, is all set to commence from Tuesday.
The five-day event, which will be held at Sabarmati Riverfront, will see participation from a large number of domestic and foreign kite enthusiasts. A total of 120 kite flyers from eight states and 74 foreign kite flyers will take part in the event.
Kamlesh Patel, chairman of Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited, will inaugurate a kite flying competition on Tuesday morning (January 10), which will be followed by a workshop of making Japanese kites. Tourism minister Jaynarayan Vyas will inaugurate a theme pavilion, depicting history of kites, in the evening.
Chief minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the kite festival in presence of Governor Dr Kamla on Wednesday morning. The kite flyers will display their skills on Wednesday and Thursday at the riverfront.
The kite flyers will also travel to Mandvi beach and Dhordo in Kutch where kite festival will take place on Friday, i.e. January 13. The next day, i.e. on Uttarayan, the participants will fly kites in pols of Ahmedabad. The event will culminate the same day.
Vipul Mittra, principal secretary, tourism & civil aviation department, said that food court, craft bazaar and adventure sports are some of the other special attractions planned at the international kite festival this year.
