IIT-JEE (Adv): Negative marks stump students in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The JEE-Advanced examination on Sunday turned out to be a tough call for most students with many finding them stumped by negative marking for wrong answers.

The students said both papers in the test were tough, but the negative marking for wrong answers surprised them.

“I would rate the exam as very tough. I hadn’t expected it to be this difficult,” said Jashwant Keshwani, a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya SAC.

Though negative marks have been a feature of the test, it wasn’t applicable to all the questions. “But this time around, several multiple-choice questions too had negative marking – making the test all the more difficult,” said Keshwani.

Samir Raval, who is father of an IIT aspirant, said that Paper-2 was bit simpler than Paper-1. “But students were taken aback by negative marking in Paper-2. It was unexpected, as this paper usually doesn’t deduct marks for wrong answers. In such a scenario, students have to be 100% sure of their answers, or they will end up losing marks,” said Raval.

About 1.26 lakh students from across the country appeared for JEE-Advance on Sunday, of which 11,000 were in Gujarat. Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara were the examination centres in the state.
