Ahmedabad: In a country where horrendous rape stories make the headlines every day and spiritual leaders (self claimed) to khaps blame women for increasing atrocities on them, is the faith healing story of this 23-year-old Dalit girl, who is a teacher in a village school in rural Gujarat.
Married to a loving husband, who runs a mobile repair shop and having a baby boy, it took her five years to overcome her hallucinations and fears. This woman was gang-raped by six teachers at the Patan Primary Teacher's Training College (PTC) in Patan in 2008.
The girl was traumatized to the extent that she used to hallucinate that her monstrous fellow teachers are making advances on her even as she was in the safety of an NGO. She had to be told over and over again that the trauma was over and had to be pushed to rebuild her life again.
The brave woman says that supportive family, acquaintances and society play an imperative role in helping rape victims rebuild their shattered lives. The love and acceptance her husband gave her, despite knowing that she was raped by six men, helped her get over the horror and the post-traumatic stress that lingered on for several months. Such people should be accepted and not abandoned or blamed, she adds.
