Ahmedabad: A day after Congress President Sonia Gandhi blasted Chief Minister Narendra Modi for being 'pro-rich', senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on Saturday equated the UPA leaders with politicians in Aamir Khan-starrer 'Peepli Live'.
"It is Peepli Live situation everywhere. Leaders after leaders of Congress are visiting Gujarat with dry promises to 6 crore Gujaratis. They want the aam aadmi to die of hunger... look at the escalating prices of essentials, my god. The situation is unbelievable. The sky-rocketing prices will further dig a hole in your pocket if you don't give a befitting reply to Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the forthcoming elections," the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said addressing a rally in Chandkheda area here.
"The song, 'sakhi saiyan to khoob hi kamat hain mehngai dayan khaye jaat hai', takes a deep dive into the life of an aam aadmi who is hurt by killer inflation. Your husband toils hard to earn a living but the Congress does not nothing to control the shooting prices. On the one hand the UPA is neck deep into corruption and on the other sustained price rise has made your life miserable. The Congress has always been shameless...," said Swaraj, who is known for her great oratorical skills at parliamentary debates and election rallies.
"We also ruled for six years at the Centre but never snatched away common man's meal," she claimed.
'Peepli Live' was a satire on price rise and farmers' suicides and subsequent media and political response.
Interestingly, Khan once drew the BJP’s bashing for his support to the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) and his criticism of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the context of the 2002 riots. The Bollywood actor's film 'Fanaa' faced an "unofficial ban" in Gujarat in 2006 over his support for the NBA after he refused to apologis, saying he had not done anything wrong.
Heaping praises on Modi, Swaraj said the state has prospered under the rule of the BJP government.
Terming Modi a "very popular and successful" CM, she said: "The BJP does not talk hollow. Modi's report card has a lot to boost about. He has transformed Gujarat in last 10 years and obviously deserves praise. Modiji is very kabil and yogya and there is nothing wrong in our praising him."
"Gujarat has become a model state in the country and for that every credit should go to its chief minister... With Modi, the pride of being a Gujarati is back. He has given Gujarat so much. He has brought widespread development in the state. Bring him back to power with a thumping victory, don't let Sonia and brigade enter your land if you want to continue with your dignified life," she added.
Firing slavo at the Centre, the former Delhi Chief Minister said: "Everything appears yellow to jaundiced eye. They will never give credit of development to Modi. They are thugs. They only lust for money. How can you forget the multi-crore CWG, 2G and coal scams."
Lambasting the UPA over FDI, the BJP leader said: "It might have cleared the final hurdle for implementation of FDI in multi-brand retail in the Rajya Sabha, it is a huge moral defeat of the government, and people will dent a massive blow to the party in Gujarat and 2014 Lok Sabha elections."
She also accused the Congress of doing mere a lip service for the poor but actually working for the rich.
