'Taste of India' in US: Amul to establish a dairy plant in New York
Ahmedabad: In its first overseas tie-up, Indian dairy products’ giant Amul will set up a facility at Waterloo village in US state of New York after increasing demands of fresh paneer and ghee from a large Indian diaspora concentrated in nearby areas.
The Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Limited, or Amul Dairy, has reportedly signed a tripartite agreement with its parent body Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), and a US-based dairy plant owned by a NRI businessman.
The new facility is expected to come up near Waterloo village in New York state at a existing dairy plant owned by NRI Piyush Patel.
"New York is a milk surplus state and with this arrangement we will be able to produce and supply Amul products in the US as well as Canada, and export it to Europe," Patel, owner of Summit Milk Products, told TOI.
"We have acquired all the necessary licences, including US FDA approval, and are now working on the engineering aspects before Amul packets are manufactured," he added.
