Ajit Pawar to be sworn in as Deputy CM of Maharashtra today

Mumbai: NCP leader Ajit PawarAjit Pawar took oath as deputy chief minister of Maharashtra on Friday.

Senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar had stepped down as the deputy CM of Maharashtra on September 25 after his name cropped up in the state irrigation scam.

After the presentation of the White Paper on irrigation, it was widely anticipated that re-induction of Ajit would be announced soon. Several NCP leaders and activists were clamouring for Ajit’s comeback before the winter session of the state legislative, which begins at Nagpur on December 10.

Pawar, 53, resigned after allegations that he had arbitrarily doled out irrigation contracts where he was the state irrigation minister during 1999-2009.

Pawar had made it clear he would remain the NCP Legislature Party leader. He had also announced that he would not join the government as a minister until his name was "cleared" of the alleged irregularities.

The White Paper on irrigation published recently is largely perceived as a clean chit to the beleaguered Maratha leader.

Dismissing the White Paper as "grossly misleading", the BJP had demanded an SIT-level probe against Ajit Pawar and Water Resources Minister Sunil Tatkare.
