Bachchan Bol: Big B becomes a translator, but what did he translate?
Mumbai: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is very vocal about his father’s writing and takes inspiration from late Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Big B translated one of his father’s writing and posted on his blog.
Although he said translation can never catch the essence of the original, Mr. Bachchan posted the translated version on his blog and called it an “inept translation.”
Following is translation that Big B attempted.
“Love needs definite redemption. It becomes sad and disappointed when it does not. 'Mercy' or 'pity' - 'karuna', knows only to 'give'. 'Karuna' does not want to be diluted or melted through expectation. Which is why I consider 'karuna' to be greater and larger than love. Love has an odour a smell of selfishness. But 'karuna' is much above this. If love could be unselfish I would not hesitate to give it the name of 'karuna'. Love could and can be the unforced, plain credence or belief. But 'karuna' was born out of dedication, discipline, meditation, something that was experienced, borne, to bear, to have suffered a pain that had been digested. That is why I consider a 'karuna sheel' individual to be more developed and aware and evolved than one that can be called a lover.” ~ HRB
