MUMBAI: The HPV DNA test which can detect the presence of oncogenic strains of papillomavirus (high risk HPV) associated with cancer in cervical cells could soon be available at a price making it easily available to poor patients.

The central Food and Drugs Association is working towards this aim. Dr Surendra Shastri, head of preventive oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital has said that the test which is now being offered at a price of rs. 900 for general patients and Rs. 300 for those belonging to the below poverty line could soon be available for just Rs. 100.

The test will also reveal whether the patient has future chances of contracting the virus.
The projections from Globocan 2008 reveal that 72,825 women died due to cervical cancer. Globocan is a software that is worked out by the World Health Organisation and the International Agency for Research on Cancer every few years to help public health officials to work out a battle-plan against cancer.
