Mumbai police cracks R 31 lakh gold robbery case; 3 arrested
Mumbai: The city police on Friday claimed to have cracked the case of robbery of gold jewellery worth Rs 31 lakh from a Mumbai-based jeweller in Ahmednagar district in the state with the arrest of three history-sheeters.
The accused Rehmat Singh Rajput, who had been earlier arrested on November 23 in an attempted robbery case in the city by crime branch officials, is currently in Arthur Road jail while two other accused Rakesh Bachhawat and Sanjay Jain were picked up from neighbouring Thane district and handed over to police in Sangamner in Ahmednagar district, which placed the two under arrest, crime branch official said.
According to police, acting on a tip-off that a robbery attempt would be made near a hospital in Parel of central Mumbai here on November 23, a trap was laid at the place.
Rajput and his three more associates Ganesh Gauda, Anand Pillai and Ganesh Bansode were found moving suspiciously after which they were apprehended, the official said adding that firearms were also found in their possession.
During thorough interrogation of Rajput, he revealed that he was involved in robbing a Mumbai-based jeweller Vikram Bora of gold ornaments worth Rs 31 lakh in Ahmednagar on November 7, police said.
Rajput disclosed Bachhawat and Jain, who reside in Bhayander of neighbouring Thane district, were also part of the gang that looted the jeweller after firing two rounds in the air.
Based on the information, Bachhawat and Jain were picked up, police said adding that after being informed, Ahmednagar's Sangamner city police arrived here and placed the two under arrest in their case. Sangamner city police are also trying to seek the custody of Rajput, who is now in Arthur Road jail, in their case.
According to police, Bachhawat, who was facing life imprisonment in a murder case in Nashik jail, had jumped parole on May 24.
