Pune: The Pune-Mumbai expressway witnessed a major pile-up at Kamshet on Saturday evening. Some 10 people were injured and 30 vehicles were damaged in the bizarre mishap. Vehicular traffic on the Pune-Mumbai corridor of the expressway came to a grinding halt for nearly two hours due to the accident.

Assistant police inspector Rajendra Patil, who is officer in-charge of Wadgoan Maval police station, said, “Heavy rainfall in Malavali-Kamshet area on Saturday was apparently the cause of the mishap. It all began with a state transport bus skidding over the expressway in the Kamshet tunnel.”

According to the police, the state transport bus that was heading towards Mumbai from Pune dashed the walls of the tunnel after skidding. It then came to a halt and turned turtle after which some speeding vehicles dashed it blocking the road. The situation further aggravated as other vehicles kept on ramming into the vehicles.

Police said that out of the 10 injured people, three sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to Lokmanya Hospital in Nigdi. “The ST bus driver has been held but we have not filed a case against him. If our preliminary investigations reveal that his negligence resulted in the mishap, we would file a case,” Patil said.

Teams of Ideal Road Builder’s expressway security force and highway police rushed to the spot after getting news of the incident. They pressed four cranes into service to tow away the vehicles and clear the road.

However, it took them two hours to clear the road. Vehicles heading to Mumbai from Pune were redirected towards the old highway. All this while, the expressway remained closed for traffic.

This is the second such mishap on the expressway this year. Two men travelling in a jeep were crushed to death in a major pile-up involving 11 vehicles on the expressway’s Bhor Ghat section near Khopoli on April 15.
