New Delhi: Chairman of the 87-year-old Bajaj Group, Rahul Bajaj has been among India's most successful and recognisable business leaders, exemplifying the spirit of private enterprise in the decades that followed liberalisation.

In charge of the conglomerate since 1965, Bajaj has seen his share of ups and downs. Once the undisputed ruler in the Indian two-wheeler segment, his flagship company Bajaj Auto was dethroned by rival Hero MotoCorp, thanks to an impressive product line-up as well as an aggressive marketing campaign.

However, the company, run by Rahul's son Rajiv, is currently the country's second largest maker of two-wheelers. It is also closing in on the market leader.

Bajaj, who turned 75 on June 10, has also been among its more vocal members, often expressing his views on a range of issues such as bailouts for struggling businesses as well as efforts of the government to revive the economy.
