Bhopal: Police and media fraternity have called for a transparent relationship between the two with both having a common aim of serving the general public.

Ex-CBI director D R Karthikeyan, who had probed former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination case, said, "throughout the investigations he had maintained transparency in dealing with the media which helped him a lot in getting many important information from them."

However, though police did not like the word transparency, may be because of job compulsions, but with changing times they will have to answer queries raised by the media, Karthikeyan said, during a recent seminar on Communication between media and police organised by Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communications.

Former IPS officer and Wardha-based Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University vice chancellor Vibhuti Narayan Rai, who was SP of Allahabad during the 1992 Ayodhya dispute, said he realised the importance of police-media communication when incorrect reports on the issue came up and he had to make efforts to stop them from getting into print.

Former Madhya Pradesh DGP S C Tripathi said it is very important for the police and media to have "mutual trust", specially when dealing with sensitive situations. Quoting a survey, ex-IPS officer and Jabalpurs Rani Durgavati university former VC Arun Gurtoo said despite problems with the media, its credibility stands at 80 per cent, while police officers also believed in its importance.

Pointing out lack of communication, especially among lower-ranked police officers, state public relations department additional director Lajpat Ahuja stressed on appointing a PRO at district level.

On the occasion, senior journalist Devpriya Awasthi criticised the trend of sensationalising the news.
