Eunuchs may run for office in MP assembly elections
Bhopal: Nayak Panchyat, a representative body of different groups of eunuchs in the country, on Monday announced that eunuchs would contest election in eight assembly constituencies in the coming MP assembly elections.
Shakila, one of the representatives of the community, told DNA that eight seats have been identified for contesting elections in the state but added that names of the seats would be announced at an 'appropriate time'.
Around 2,000 eunuchs affiliated to 19 panchayats across the country have gathered in Ujjain for offering pind daan during ongoing shraddh paksha.
This is an old tradition where the Ujjain-based community of eunuchs invites other community members during this period.
On Monday, the community members took out a rally in Ujjain while dancing to tunes of drums and other musical instruments. They also offered a 21 kg bell at the Gopal temple.
The community members are holding daily panchayats starting from October 1 at Kanha parisar Fazalpura in Ujjain.
Significantly, political aspirations of eunuchs are not new to Madhya Pradesh. The state has the distinction of electing first eunuch legislator from Suhagpur assembly seat in Shahdol district--Shabnam Mousi. Eunuchs were elected as Mayors in Katni and Sagar too.
