New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed Karnataka to release 2.44 tmc of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu for irrigating its standing crops in the delta basin.

The apex court bench headed by justice RM Lodha passed the judgement based on the report of the expert committee that had visited the Tamil Nadu part in the delta region.

The SC order was immediately challenged by Tamil Nadu which urged the top court to consider its request for nine tmc of water arguing that the state needed more water for standing crops spread over six lakh hectares of land. Senior counsel CS Vaidvanathan, who was representing Tamil Nadu, raised concern over the expert committee report, arguing that the report was not based on objective grounds.

However, the court brushed aside TN's appeal. "According to you, whatever you say should be accepted as gospel truth and the order be passed accordingly," said the Court on Tamil Nadu's appeal to reconsider its decision.
