New Delhi: As the public outrage grew over police inaction in the the molestation of a teenaged girl by a group of 20 men outside the Guwahati pub Assam Director General of Police Jayanta Narayan Chowdhury on Friday defended cops role in the case.

Defending the department, Chowdhury stated that police cannot be present in every nook and corner of the city. "Police reached the spot within 30 minutes of the incidence. We have identified 11 out of 12 molesters and arrested the four accused," he said.

When asked about the delay caused by the police to arrest the accused, Chowdhury said: "Police is taking time to arrest the accused as we want to be doubly sure."

The ignorance at the part of police can be gauged from the fact that even four days after the incidence, police is unable to arrest all the accused. "If we are lucky, we will be able to nab the rest of them," he added.

He was also found unaware about the posters that were put in the city to identify the culprits.

Meanwhile, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday called for action by the Tarun Gogoi government in Assam in the Guwahati molestation case. " I would expect the state government to take action," Chidambaram said.

A teenaged girl was pulled by her hair, lifted up, thrown down, beaten up, thrashed, molested, groped, slapped and stripped in full public view for 30 minutes on Monday night at a busy road near the Christian Basti area in Guwahati by a mob of around 20 men.

A total of four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident in front of a bar on the Guwahati-Shillong Road on Monday night, which led to a public outcry after a video of the shocking incident was uploaded on Youtube.

"One more person has been arrested and 12 others have been identified," Assam Director General of Police Jayanta Narayan Chowdhury said.

"Thanks to the prompt media coverage we have got the video clip of the brawl and have identified 12 of them. We will take strong action against the guilty,” the DGP said.

The other two arrested were Dhanonjoy Basfor and Bulbul Das.

They were charged under Sec  341 (wrongful restraint), Sec 143 (unlawful assembly), Sec 294 (obscene act), Sec 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), Sec 354 (assault or criminal force on a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) of IPC following a written complaint filed by the girl's mother.
