RIP IK Gujral: A look at the man who gave India 'Gujral doctrine'

New Delhi: Popular for his 'Gujral Doctrine', Inder Kumar Gujral was the 12th Prime Minister of India. Gujral was the second PM to govern exclusively from the Rajya Sabha, after HD Deve Gowda. He was born on December 4, 1919.
 
Gujral was appointed Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union as the Indian envoy to Moscow.
 
During this second tenure as Minister of External Affairs, he propounded his 'Gujral Doctrine', which called for better relations with neighbours. He always emphasized the importance of friendly and warm relations with India's neighbours.
 
He made his debut in politics when he was in college. He stepped into the field of politics when he was in college. He joined the communist party and after the Indo-Pak war, he joined the Congress party. Gujral left the Indian National Congress party in the mid-1980s and joined the Janata Dal. He belongs to a family of freedom fighters. Both his parents participated in the freedom struggle in Punjab. 
 
At the young age of eleven, he himself actively participated in the freedom struggle in 1931 and was arrested and severely beaten by the police for organising movement of young children in the Jhelum town. In 1942, he was jailed during the Quit India
 
After 1996 elections, when the United Front government was formed at the center under the leadership of HD Deve Gowda, Gujral was again named Minister of External Affairs. 
 
He also served as Union Minister or Minister of State of several other portfolios—Communications and Parliamentary Affairs, Information & Broadcasting, Works & Housing and Planning.
