RSS shuts door on Modi? Gujarat CM's PM-candidature ruled out

New Delhi: The prospects of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as BJP's prime ministerial candidate seem to be getting grimmer with each passing day. If the sources are to be believed, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) too has backed out from supporting Modi as PM candidate.

Amid a sudden outpouring support for Gujarat's strongman to be represented as the BJPs Prime Ministerial candidate, RSS has reportedly taken the decision after consultation with BJP leadership.

BJP leaders have argued that important issues like inflations and corruption will be sidelined if Modi is projected as party's choice for country's coveted post triggering debate on communalism and secularism.

The BJP leadership is also worried about the divide between National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners - Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal United (JD(U)), on PM candidate.

In this regard, BJP leaders including LK Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh and Murli Manohar Joshi held meeting with RSS sarkaryavah Suresh Joshi aka Bhaiyyaji Joshi and RSS pointsman for BJP, Suresh Soni.

According to sources, although Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh acknowledged Modi's potential and skills for being the PM candidate but did not rule out the current political scenario which stands against Modi.

The argument given by BJP leadership is that naming Modi as party's prime minister candidate will provide an opportunity to the Congress to get minority votes. More so, the move may also widen rift with its old ally JD(U).

Notably, JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar has already opposed Modi's name for PM candidate while another key NDA ally Shiv Sena backed Sushma's name as its choice for the candidature. It is believed that RSS has shared BJP's analysis with Modi.
