Jaipur: The traders are still thanking the Almighty for the ‘terrific sale’ that they witnessed this Diwali. But not for those who have their establishments in Sodala area. During the festival, people avoided this area for shopping due to the ongoing metro work.
Bumpy roads and parking problems kept the consumers away from the shops on New Sanganer Road. Besides, it was a black Diwali for those too whose shops were demolished due to metro project this year. Although such shopkeepers have been allotted land at other places, it will take a couple of years for them to establish their businesses in new areas.
The problems are only compounding for the traders in Sodala. The road is becoming narrower with each passing day. People face inconvenience in reaching the shops because of metro barricades put up in the middle of the road. As a result of all this, the sale at the shops is affected badly.
The elite residents of Shyam Nagar nowadays take Ajmer Road for commuting to avoid traffic congestion. This is another reason for the decline in the footfalls at shops on New Sanganer Road.
An electronics shop owner says, "There is not enough space to even walk properly, so how will a person park his vehicle and climb up to the shop. One of the old shops has even closed down due to a sharp dip in sale. The festival this year has not been very encouraging for us. We did not even order items in large quantities.”
The metro pillars being built in Ved Vatika Colony have narrowed the road further, thus compounding the problems of the locals.
