Water of river Bandi getting worse

Jaipur: The Rajasthan high court order has failed to deter the flow of pollutants onto the Bandi river in Pali, leaving the river at the mercy of the textile units operating in the region.

Despite repeated calls from the High court - in 2004 and 2008 - the state government has failed to take necessary measures against the flow of chemical effluents thrown out from the textile units.

A report carried by the Times of India showed that the court once again pulled the state government for playing with citizens' health by not keeping water bodies free of pollution.

The ecological health of both the river and Bandi Nehra Dam is a cause of concern for the villagers. Water tests conducted by the administration have revealed that the presence of chemical components have reached alarming proportions. While the amount of Total dissolved solids (TDS) should not exceed 1500mg/per litre, the component was measured between 7,000-8,000 mg per litre, making the river's water unfit for consumption.

The presence of effluents have raised concern among the villagers in the region.

Mahaveer Singh, general secretary, Sri Kisan Paryavaran Sangharsh Samiti, said that the pollutants from the river have rendered thousands of bigha of land infertile.

He added that the presence of pollutants have left several people with skin diseases. Singh said that the villagers are planning an agitation immediately after Diwali, if the state government failed to address their concerns.
