Do you still want your man to pop the question?
We might have progressed, but looks like both women and men still tend to hold traditional views when it comes to marriage proposals, researchers say.
Some young adults were asked about their personal preferences for marriage traditions for a study by UC Santa Cruz researchers and a majority of them claimed that they would want the man
in a relationship to propose marriage. And that's not all, a substantial majority of women also responded that they would want to take their husband’s last name.
“I was surprised at how strong the preference was,” Rachael D. Robnett was quoted as saying.
“Given the prevalence of liberal attitudes among students at the university where data collection took place it is striking that so many participants held traditional preferences,” she wrote,
“Even more surprising is that many participants overtly state that their preferences were driven by a desire to adhere to gender-role traditions,” Robnett added.
The study has been published in the Journal of Adolescent Research.
