End of the Internet: 'Doomsday' virus will crash thousands of computers on July 9

London: The Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned that internet users across the world about a quarter-million computer users might lose internet access on July 9 following a virus.

According to the reports, the FBI warned that the "Alureon/DNS Changer bot" virus on the computers is a malicious software at the heart of a hacking scam that US authorities shut down last November.

It was learnt the FBI detected the virus and established a safety net to keep infected computers running. But on July 9, it will 'pull the plug' as a cost-cutting measure.

The software found its way into thousands of computers worldwide last year when a group of hackers across the world took control of infected computers as part of an online advertising scam.

Some blogs and news reports hyped the risk of an outage, warning of a potential "blackout" and describing the Alureon malware as the "Internet Doomsday" virus.

Going by a report published in a Daily Mail UK, around 350,000 PC users have machines infected with an invisible, undetectable 'Trojan' computer virus sending users to unintended and illegal sites. After July 9, infected users won't be able to connect to the internet.

The number of computers infected is more than 277,000 worldwide. The number was 360,000 in April. Of those still infected, the FBI believes that about 64,000 are in the US.
