Euro 2012: Torres lifts the Golden Boot award
Kiev: Fernando Torres collected the Euro Cup 2012 Golden Boot award with three goals and one assist. Torres scored his third goal in Spain's 4-0 victory against Italy in the Euro Cup final on Sunday.
Torres edged Gomez in the race for the Golden Boot, with three goals and one assist he was tied along with Germany's Gomez. The boot went to Torres, as he has played fewer minutes than his competitor.
After scoring the third goal for his country the Spaniard was back in action when he assisted his Chelsea team-mate Juan Mata for their fourth goal moments later.
It is the first occasion for any player to score twice in the Euro Cup final. Earlier, he had scored against Germany in 2008 Euro Cup final match.
His first game of the tournament came against the Republic of Ireland in the second group match.
The 15 minutes cameo in the final saw Torres edging out Gomez, who finished at second place.
Gomez’s first goal came in the group match against Portugal, followed by a goal against Netherlands. He then assisted his teammate Lukas Podolski to score a 2-1 victory over Denmark.
Alan Dzagoev came in third position having played the least amount of minutes of all other players who were level on three strikes but his goals were not enough to stop Russia from being eliminated at the group stage.
The Russian footballer, Alan Dzagoev made it to the third spot. Dzagoev having played the least amount of minutes top the table among players with three successful hits.
Mario Mandzukic, Mario Balotelli and Cristiano Ronaldo complete the table with three goals.
Torres succeeds injured teammate David Villa, who was present in the stands along with injured captain Carles Puyol, and who was the top scorer at the Championships four years ago with four goals.
