London: The 30th Olympics kicked off in fine fashion in London late on Friday.


It began with Oscar-winning-filmmaker Danny Boyle's conceptualisation—The Isles of Wonder begin.


The ceremonial sounding of The Olympic Bell signalled the start of the London 2012 Olympic games.


Caliban’s speech from Shakespeare’s The Tempest is spoken by the character of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Britain’s most revered engineer, played by Kenneth Branagh.


The Parade featured 5 carnival performers, 10 people on a 1970s DJ float, 12 newspaper boys, 20 Jarrow marchers, 24 Chelsea pensioners, 39 members of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, 43 Pearly Kings and Queens, a Beatles float with 48 people, 50 Suffragettes, 52 members of the Nostalgia Steel Band, and 72 Windrush passengers and porters.

 

Giant Olympic Rings glow, having been forged from red-hot metal. 

 

Daniel Craig as James Bond and Queen Elizabeth star in a short film shot in Buckingham Palace. It's believed this is the first time that the Queen has acted in a film. 

To the shock and awe of millions around the world, 'The Queen' just 'air-dropped' into the Olympic Stadium. 


JK Rowling read from Peter Pan and some of the great villains of British literature appear as puppets, including Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Voldemort from Harry Potter and – perhaps most terrible of all – the Childcatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang came into the Olympic Stadium.


The London Symphony Orchestra are performing the theme from the film most associated with the Olympics; Chariots of Fire.


With a very familiar face joining them on keyboard—Rowan 'Mr Bean' Atkinson.


British scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee who invented the World Wide Web makes an appearance.



Here come the athletes!


Argentina's Flagbearer is Hockey player Luciana Aymar. He has won the International Hockey Federation Player of the Year award a record seven times and famously wears pink shoes!


Australia's Flagbearer is Basketball player Lauren Jackson. She was named Womens' NBA Most Valuable Player three times and debuted at just 16 years of age.


Contingent of China, the last hosts and champions of Beijing Olympics, appears.


Here comes the Indian contingent. 80-odd athletes led by wrestler Sushil Kumar.


'Fastest man on Earth' Usain Bolt leads the Jamaican contingent.


Tennis ace, Maria Sharapova, leads the Russian team.


Tennis player, Novak Djokovic, carries the Serbian flag.


Surprise, surprise! Tennis champ Roger Federer isn't leading the Swiss side. Instead, it's another tennis player Stanislas Wawrinka.
