Manchester: Former captain of the England cricket team Andrew Flintoff came off the canavas to kick start his professional boxing career with a win over American heavyweight Richard Dawson on Friday night here.

The 34-year former all-rounder was down after a severe left hook in the early seconds of the second round that sent him to canvas.

However, Flintoff got up before the eight counting was over and made a comeback in the fight with a more calm and composed performance to win the bout 39-38.

The former fast bowling all-rounder from Lancashire lost three-and-a-half stone to weigh in at 15st 6lb for debut in the world of boxing during his five-month long training with former world featherweight champion Barry McGuigan.

Flintoff's England teammate Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison were also present in the ringside during the bout.

Flintoff represented England in 79 Tests before retiring in September 2010 due to injury. Flintoff guided the English team to their famous Ashes victory in 2005 after a gap of almost two decades.
