Kuala Lumpur: Shinji Kagawa of Japan won the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) International Player-of-the-Year award on Thursday.
The 23-year-old Manchester United midfielder from Japan beat Australia’s veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer of Fulham and his national teammate Yuto Nagatomo of Inter Milan to grab this inaugural award.
Kagawa played a significant role in Borussia Dortmund's journey to clinch the Bundesliga title before moving to England.
South Korean winger Lee Keun-ho was adjudged the long-standing AFC Player-of-the-Year award for his contribution in Ulsan Hyundai's triumph in the AFC Champions League.
Lee became the first Korean to bag this award by beating Iranian midfielder Ali Karimi and Chinese defender Zheng Zhi.
