Ind vs Eng LIVE: India elects to bat, Harbhajan Singh rested
Kolkata: The Indian openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir started of steadily and added 47 for the first wicket before Sehwag was run out after a misunderstanding during running between the wicket. Sehwag went after scoring 23 runs.
Gambhir, who has been under stark criticism following a string of poor performances had hit back at the critics saying he and Sehwag were still the best opening pair India had. Irrespective how that comment was taken, this knock will surely go a long way to keep his detractors out of the picture for a while.
Gambhir’s 50 had as many as 10 boundaries as he looked in top form from the start of the session. On a pitch that had a something for the fast bowlers, Gambhir wasn’t troubled by the England bowlers James Anderson and comeback man Steven Finn.
Cheteshwar Pujara, who came in to bat at number two after Sehwag's departure, failed to re-do the magic of previous matches as she was bowled out by Monty Panesar at the score of 18 runs.
Gautam Gambir with his most-needed fifty steered India to the past-100 mark after early dismissals of Sehwag and Pujara.
Gambhir became second victim of Panesar at the score of 60 when Trott pouched a sharp catch at slip.
Indian skipper MS Dhoni was lucky for the third time in a row as India won the toss and elected to bat first at Eden Gardens pitch here in the third test.
India made one change in the playing XI by bringing in Ishant Sharma in place of Harbhajan Singh for the match.
Whereas, the English side replaced Bell and Finn with Bairstow and Broad.
