'Jurm yahan kam hai'? Acid attack on 4 sisters in UP

Muzaffarnagar: Two unidentified men, while riding a bike, threw acid on three women and a student in Uttar pradesh on Tuesday.

The four victims are sisters and were returning back from school after taking a board exam when the men allegedly attacked them. The girls were reportedly rushed to the Gangaram Hospital in Delhi. One of the victim has been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The men fled the scene within the blink of an eye and are still at large. The police is investigating the matter.

Psychologists say that a majority of acid attackers happen to be spurned men who are unable to take rejection to their sexual advances.

The recent brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi had sparked nationwide protests. Such incidences throw an uncomfortable spotlight on the levels of increasing violence against women in the country, where sexual assaults are often dismissed as mere "eve-teasing".

National crime records show that 228,650 of the total 256,329 violent crimes recorded last year were against women.

According to the Human rights groups in India, the recent changes to the rape laws do not go far enough to deal with the dramatic rise in acid attacks on women.

However, in a swift move by some concerned citizens, a new web portal to chronicle the struggles of acid attack survivors was launched recently on the International Women's Day. The website, www.stopacidattacks.org details several cases of acid attacks on women from across the country and tracks their progress.
