Gonda: When the Karnailganj police dismissed a gang-rape of a 15-year old girl as ‘mere sexual harassment, they apparently failed to realise that fate of the victim would nail their lies. And that is exactly what happened.
Gang-raped by four men in June 2012 in Gonda district, the victim, back then, was criticized and shooed away by the local police for ‘framing innocent men’. This prompted the victim’s family to approach the court in October 2012, where the judge ordered the police to investigate the incident.
Not mending their unscrupulous ways, the police filed a final report with the court which claimed that the victim had only been ‘harassed’, and no rape had taken place.
But in the first week of January, the victim started experiencing stomach aches. On medical check-up, it was revealed that she was pregnant. Clearly, she was bearing the brunt of her rapists’ actions, who were still roaming free.
In search for justice, the victim’s mother approached the Superintendent of Police with the girl’s medical report. Clearly embarrassed by the action of his junior officers earlier, the SP ordered an enquiry into the incident and promised action against the erring police officials.
