Kendriya Vidyalayas reduce weight of school bags

Bhaskar News Network

For students of 13 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in Pune region, their journey to schools and back home are no longer 'back-breaking.' Beginning this academic year, the managements of the schools have reduced the weight of the school bags following directives from the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, the apex body that controls KVs across the country.

For standard I and II, the weight of the books and notebooks should not be more than 2 kg; for students of standard III and IV it has been set at 3 kg; for standard V to VII it is 4 kg; and 6 kg thereafter.
The students, relieved from the huge burden, expressed their happiness that their school bags have become lighter.  Thick notebooks have been replaced with thinner ones, which is more convenient when taking notes.

According to the KV authorities, the weight of the schools bags have been decided in such a manner that it does not exceed 1/5th the weight of the student, so that the student's spine and skeletal structure remains strong and upright.

However, parents of some students are apparently not happy with the management's decision to reduce the weight of the school bags. They argue that carrying heavy schools bags is essential for their children to learn more.

The head of the department of psychology at Abasaheb Garware College, BD Garud, hailed the decision of the KV Sangathan in reducing the weights of the school bags. Different KVs have adopted various methods to reduce the weight of the school bags. In Army Area KV school, the notebooks for home work and class work are the same.

.At DIAT KV, Girinagar, the school celebrates 'no bag day' on Saturdays, apparently to create awareness about the need to carry light school bags. Moreover, small shelves have been allotted to students in classrooms to keep their books. The students have pasted their photos on these shelves.
