Bangalore: The high court on Wednesday gave the green signal for widening Sankey Road, but has issued a range of directions to Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike which includes ensuring that Sankey Tank bed area is not breached under the guise of carrying out the project.
The division bench headed by Justice N Kumar also directed BBMP to complete the road widening work within 12 months from now.
The BBMP must also take effective steps to see that the trees are protected and new saplings are sowed to replace the already cut trees on slopes of Sankey Tank embankment. The court has also allowed the liberty to the non governmental organisation, Hasiru Usiru, to coordinate the works in ensuring protection, preservation and extension of tree growth on the sides of the road.
The bench has further directed BBMP to extend full cooperation in environmental protection programmes while carrying out the road widening project on Sankey Tank Bund Road.
The bench said that in future if the BBMP has to cut trees on the side of the roads they have to go strictly by the Tree Protection Act. As and when the corporation applies to the tree officer for the removal of trees, the latter should bring it to the notice of Hasiru Usiru and pass appropriate orders in accordance with the law.
BBMP should maintain transparency and the Karnataka Town and Country Planning (KTCP) Act must be complied with as directed by the high court for road widening.
