Chandigarh/Dehradun: Rains and floods in Uttarakhand have destroyed almost every structure created by men in the hilly state. Thousands got stranded, many precious lives have been lost and many more are waiting to be rescued from remote areas. Fortunately pilgrims and tourists stranded in Kedarnath have been rescued but there are many areas where help is yet to reach. Bad weather is seriously hampering relief efforts. Uttarakhand Disaster Management Minister Yashpal Arya had said on Sunday that at least 5,000 people might have died during the disaster. Kedarnath Valley was the most-affected area in entire Uttarakhand.
The terrain of the area is such that only helicopter can airlift stranded people in the changed ground realities. Nearly all the bridges and roads in the area have been washed away.
Army, Paramilitary forces and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel have been rescuing people, working day and night.
There have been moments when one swings between hope and despair. Emotions are running high and there are many still waiting for the helping hand.
We have brought exclusive pictures of the various aspects of this tragedy.
