New Delhi/Wagah: The police have recovered about 101 kilogram heroin and huge cache of ammunition (over 500 rounds) from a goods train during a surprise check by the Indian security forces at the Wagah border in Punjab. The train was on its way to Delhi Junction from Pakistan. The drugs were seized during the off loading process from train to station godown at Wagah station on Monday. According to police, the contraband was packed in 1 kg packets and had Pakistani markings on them. The cops have, however, not revealed the type of ammunition seized from the station.
The police believe attempts are being made to revive militancy in Punjab with large quantity of drugs and ammunition making way into Punjab not only from Pakistan, but also from other neighbouring states.
The police also believe that Punjab has become a safe haven for drugs from where the contrabands are further directed to other Indian states and overseas markets.
This comes after heroin worth Rs 10 crore was seized in Ferozepur sector on Monday. The contraband was packed in 1 kg denomination.
With this seizure, over 230 kg of contraband has been recovered along the international border in Punjab this year.
