Anil Kapoor had confessed not too long ago to this writer that he wishes to take Indian television to another level with his desi adaptation of the American thriller series '24'. Kapoor, who had played a supporting part in the original, is all set to take over the male lead in the adaptation.
“By October I’ll complete my film assignments and then I’ll devote the next 6-7 months to only playing my part in '24',” Anil had enthused two months ago.
It looks like his dream project would have to wait. 24, we hear, has been postponed at least for now.
While Anil chose not to respond to queries on the reason for the delay we hear the scriptwriter-dialogue writers Rensil D’Silva, Priya Pinto, Bhavani Iyer and Milap Zaveri had been brainstorming over the content of the Indian '24' for months. No consensus was reached.
Revealing the reason for the delay a source close to the project said, “Anil doesn’t want to do a faithful word-by-word adaptation of the original material. Phaayda kya hai? He feels an adaptation makes sense only when it takes the material ahead. At the same time he wants the desi '24' to be faithful to the original material. The writing is taking longer than expected, what with every quip and exclamation in the original script demanding a full-on desi treatment without losing the flavour and vitality of the original.”
Another source says the delay is due to the serial’s writer Rensil D’Silva first getting busy with scripting Karan Johar’s 'Student Of The Year’ and now with the direction of Dharma Productions’ ‘Unglee’.
Incidentally Anil was offered a pivotal role in ‘Unglee’ which he turned down.
Abhinay Deo who will direct ‘24’ for Anil reverted saying, “We start shooting in mid-January.” When asked the reason for the delay Abhinay didn’t respond.
