The two big releases of the year ‘Jab Tak Hain Jaan’ and ‘Son Of Sardaar’ have set the cash registers ringing. Even though the war is on, Shah Rukh Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer ‘JTHJ’ has got a better response than ‘SOS’.
“‘SOS’ is an entertainer and a must watch. But film buffs in smaller cities are crazy about ‘SOS’. Collections of this kind hasn’t been witnessed before,” trade expert and film critic Komal Nahta said. He added, “Both films got an interesting opening at most places. While ‘JTHJ’ is packed at many cinema halls, ‘SOS’ saw 70-90% occupancy rate at many centres.’ Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ has collected Rs 15.23 crore on Day 1 in India and this is brilliant. It has been a great Diwali for trade!”
Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh spoke to us about the overseas collection. “’Jab Tak Hai Jaan' leads by a huge margin when it comes to overseas collection. In the clash of two biggies, ‘Jab Tak Hain Jaan’ and ‘Son Of Sardaar’, JTHJ has raced ahead by a massive margin. The film is faring exceptionally well in UK, USA, UAE and Australia. In New Zealand, where the film opened on Wednesday, it has created history by being the first Hindi film to open at No 1 position, overtaking the business of Hollywood biggies on that particular day.”
He added, “‘Son Of Sardaar’ is better than the Ajay Devgn-starrer released in the past, but the clash with Shah Rukh Khan in overseas collection has hit the film hard. Tamil film ‘Thuppakki’ is shining overseas, despite the overpowering competition posed by ‘Jab Tak Hain Jaan’ and ‘Son Of Sardaar’.”
Sources in the trade industry assert, “After opening with a mind boggling Rs. 10.72 Crore (across India theatrical) on the very first day, despite having 500 theaters less than the other big releases and releasing on a festive day, SOS is continuing its box office blitzkrieg across India post Diwali as well!.”
They further add, “Furthermore it has been observed by trade experts that the head count per theatre is on a higher scale for SOS than other releases, as people are flocking the available screens to see the mass entertainer onscreen. The trade buzz also says that in few important territories, this festive flick has turned out to be superstar Ajay Devgn’s highest openers till date.”
Trade expert of Complete Cinema Kumar Mohan clearly defines, “Both the films have done exceptionally well at the box-office. While JTHJ fetched Rs. 30 crores approximately, SOS, a strong competitor lags behind with 21 crores. Shah Rukh Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Jab Tak….’ has impressed the multiplex cine-goers in big cities and SOS has left an indelible mark on the minds of small cities/towns audience in single screens despite less booking courtesy Yash Raj Films marketing strategy where they had already booked maximum screens in advance during the release of Salman Khan and Katrina starrer ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. The two front runners have still days ahead to make money as Aamir Khan-Rani Mukerji-Kareena Kapoor starrer ‘Talaash’ is yet to create a buzz.”
Film critic and trade analyst Vinod Mirani begs to differ and concludes, “None of the two big releases have lived up to the hype they had created. No one stands the chance to be called as clear winner. SOS and JTHJ have fetched considerable a mediocre business. While SOS still has an entertainment value, JTHJ offers no novelty which a Yash Chopra direction film had promised. It’s bizarre! What has worked unfavorably further is the length of the film which also, has led cine-goers leave the last quarter without watching. The two films have no chance to do business until Sunday comes which may turn out to be a breather.”
