Mobile phones are the latest entrant in the land of security threat. More and more people today are using their smart-phones to access their emails, save personal data and records, access their banks. But, smartphone security has not been considered important as the security in personal computers. We have been hearing the news of infected apps on the Android play store.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University studied 100 most popular apps downloaded in the Google Play store to find apps which pick your information.

    Angry Birds, one of the most popular game apps designed by Rovio has been found taking location details. We checked the permission details which say that this application has access to “get your approximate location”.

    The free app Brightest Flashlight has access to “take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation” says the permission page.

    The free Toss It app as per its permission page says it has access to “get your precise location using the GPS or network location sources such as cell towers and Wi-Fi. These location services must be turned on and available to your device for the app to use them. Apps may use this to determine where you are, and may consume additional battery power.” It also “access the phone features of the device. This permission allows the app to determine the phone number and device IDs, whether a call is active, and the remote number connected by a call.”

    The Shazam appwhich has been updated on 10th of January this year, also access your precise location like the Toss It app. It can control you NFC and also can access your phone status and identity. In addition it can write to your USB storage, SD card and prevent your tablet or mobile phone from going to sleep.

    The Talking Tom Cat can have access to full network access to your device. This would mean the app can “create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet”. It can read your phone status, access your device Id and know when a call is active. It can also know the remote number connected to your phone. This can to retrieve information about currently and recently running tasks, and also prevent your tablet or mobile phone from going to sleep.

It can prevent your tablet or mobile phone from going to sleep and also can read your phone status, access your device Id and know when a call is active. It can also know the remote number connected to your phone.

    The Android app Mouse! Can have access to full network access to your device like the Talking Tom Cat and Dictionary.com apps. This can determine the phone number and device IDs, whether a call is active, and the remote number connected by a call, can also write on to your storage without your permission. It can also control vibration of your mobile phone.

    The Horoscope app, also like the Talking Tom Cat app can access full network to your device, can read your phone status, access your device Id and know when a call is active, can know the remote number connected to your phone and can write to your storage device without your permission.

    It can also get the list of accounts known by the tablet or phone, and can see usernames (email addresses) of the Google account(s) you have configured and can   view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.

    In addition it can also end background processes of other apps without your consent.
