Amul milk to be priced higher from Oct 3Ahmedabad: Beginning Wednesday, it will become acceptable to cry hard over spilt milk. The reason – Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) has decided to increase milk prices from October 3. The price of Amul Gold milk will rise by Rs 2 per litre, while other brands of Amul milk will be dearer by Rs 1.

When gold prices have doubled from Rs 16,000 to Rs 32,000 per 10 gram over the last three years, why should Amul’s ‘Gold’ lag much far behind? The price of the afore-mentioned milk brand by Amul has doubled in the last six years, from `20 per litre to Rs 40. In addition, all other brands including Amul Shakti, Amul Tea Special, Amul Taaza and Amul Slim & Trim will see a price rise of Rs 1.

“We are increasing milk prices only in the Ahmedabad and Saurashtra regions. From Wednesday onwards, Amul Gold will be sold for Rs 40 per litre, while Amul Shakti and Amul Tea Special will be priced at Rs 36 per litre. Amul Tazza and Amul Slim & Trim will be priced at Rs 29 and Rs 27 per litre respectively,” said managing director of GCMMF, RS Sodhi.

Giving three reasons, Sodhi said that rise in input costs has led to the increased milk prices. According to him, the main reason of the price rise is increase in the prices of cattle feed stock.

“The first reason for hiking milk prices is the rise in diesel fuel rates, which has added to our transportation cost. Simultaneously, gas which is one of the important fuels in the dairy sector has also witnessed an increase in price.

The third and most important factor is rise in cattle feed stock. In the last six months, the price of rice bran has shot up from Rs 4,500 per tonne to Rs 12,000 per tonne,” said Sodhi and added that Amul has not even passed on the full increase in input cost to the consumer.

Over the last two years, Amul has increased its milk prices by 22%.

“This year, we have increased the milk prices by only 7%, which is much lower when compared to the food inflation rate of 11%. So far in 2012, we have had upward revision in milk prices once in April and once in October,” he informed.
