Ahmedabad: If you are a resident of posh areas of the city that fall under zone 1 and like to go out for a late night bite, here is a piece of news to kill your appetite. The police are mulling withdrawal of permission given to several eateries in zone-1 to operate up till 1 am .
The DCP zone-1 has already altered the time permit of three eateries. This includes the McDonald’s outlet near Drive-in, Honest outlet near Bodakdev and Southland, close to Rajpath club. These three outlets earlier had permission to operate till 1 am but will now remain open only till 11 pm.
Apparently, the decision has been taken after a ‘survey’ carried out by the department found that several of the biker gang members, held for racing bikes and smashing car windows, often congregate at these venues. It should be noted that city police department cannot give special permit to eateries till 1 am. This power lies with the home department. However, police can alter timings if they think it affects law and order in the city.
Neeraj Badgujar, DCP, Zone-1, said so far they have reviewed the special licence, granting permission to operate till 1 am, of three restaurants. He added the drive will cover handcarts in zone-1.
The police had earlier issued a notice to these eateries regarding the same. When contacted, an official of McDonald’s refused to comment saying the decision to review the timings had nothing to do with them and was related to the mall in which they operate.
Vijay Gupta, owner of Honest, refused to comment. Sources close to the hotel said allegations of anti-social elements gathering at the venue was not true as many like the Honest outlet in Bodakdev have CCTV camera. “There is a police point nearby, then how can anti-social elements converge here?” questioned the source. Another insider said police should have first consulted the eateries.
