The first phase of voting in Gujarat saw a unprecedented record voter turnout, with a record 50% voters in 87 seats from 8am to 4pm. The voting saw a large number of oldies turning out for their tryst with democracy.

Diamond city Surat topped the list with 19 per cent voting in the first three hours.
The first phase of elections will cover 87 seats in south Gujarat, Saurashtra and four seats in Ahmedabad district.
In the first hour, voter turnout was recorded at 7.55 per cent. In the past, voting has never crossed 10per cent in the first two hours.
High voting percentage in 2002 and 2007 assembly polls had added to BJP's tally.
Gujarat recorded an average 55% voting till 3.30pm, with Dharampur in southern part of the state registering 70% turnout.
