Origin of the mantra
It is believed to have been first used by the great sage of India- Rishi Markandeya. This knowledge was given to him by Lord Brahma after years of penance.

Markandeya later passed this knowledge to Sati, Daksha's daughter, who then rescued moon or Chandra after it was cursed by her father, King Daksha.

The king had cursed the moon to die and never be seen in the sky, but by reciting this mantra, the effect of Daksha’s curse slowed down. Eventually, Shiva took the crescent moon and placed it upon his head.
