valentinesday_288Valentine's Day is celebrated on 14th of February every year. It is the day of lovers, the day of exchanging love messages, gifting flowers and sending greeting cards. St. Valentine- the patron saint of lovers is remembered on this day. It is an annual commemoration day, celebrating love and affection between lovers.

There is a popular belief behind the celebration of Valentine's day. It is celebrated in the memory of St. Valentine, a Roman bishop, who was martyred on 14th Feb 269AD.

During the time of St. Valentine, the golden era of Roman Empire had almost ended and the empire was constantly attacked by many. More and more soldiers were recruited to protect the nation. Claudius II, when became the emperor issued an order forbidding marriage to assure the quality of soldiers believing that married men did not make good soldiers. He felt that married men got too much emotionally attached to their families and they would become poor fighters unable to serve the country.

St. Valentine, refused this law and planned to counter the monarch's order and thus he secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men and women. Whenever lovers thought of marrying, they went to St. Valentine who joined them in the sacrament of matrimony. This could not be hidden for long and Claudius came to know, thus St. Valentine was arrested and thrown into the jail.

Legend also says that after he was jailed, he was beheaded but before that he fell in love with the jailor's daughter, whom he had befriended with and performed a miracle by healing her blindness. On the evening of his execution, the bishop passed her a note on which 'from your Valentine' was written.

It is believed that the note was written on 14 Feb 269AD just before his death. Since then Valentine has become an angel, a patron and the symbol of love who is said to bring lovers closer and unite them.
